Greater automation, more control systems integration, and almost 3,000 different alarms in total on high-specification assets make it extremely difficult to properly manage alarms. Missing or buried alarms, alarm flooding, ambiguous alarms, alarm calibration errors – we’ve seen it all. That is why the IADC asked Don Shafer, our Chief Technology and Safety Officer, to give a presentation at the June 2010 World Drilling Conference on how to improve the control of alarm systems, and how to achieve compliance with industry regulations such as NPD YA-711, EEMUA 191 and ISA 18.2.
